Handmade Conservatory

Our Handmade Conservatory flute traces its ancestry to Mr. Powell’s first Commercial flute, made in 1928. Today’s Conservatory model stands up to the flutist’s technical requirement s as well as acoustical demands. These flutes, played by professionals around the world, are valued for their colorful tone and dynamic range. The pinless mechanism offers smooth action, allowing technical passages to be played with precision.

The Conservatory flute features French (open) cups, pointed arms, drawn tone holes (made with our patented Zinki technology – U.S. patent #7,420,109), the Modern Powell Scale, A-442 or 444 pitch, a fully pinless mechanism with traditional adjustments, a hand-cut Custom headjoint, pointed arms, Straubinger pads, leather case and case cover.

Conservatory flutes are offered in .016" sterling silver or Aurumite® 9k bodies with sterling silver keys.

Aurumite® flutes are created using a patented process that electronically fuses two tubes of gold and silver. The Aurumite body is .016" thick with an exterior layer of 9k rose gold and an inner layer of sterling silver.  This unique material combines the projection of silver with the warmth of gold.

“My Powell Conservatory flute is just what I've dreamed of. With its rich, dark sound and fluid mechanism, I can use it in all my worlds — from the orchestra to jazz festivals and beyond.”

Aurumite 9k - Aurumite® flutes are created using a patented process that electronically fuses two tubes of gold and silver. The Aurumite body is .016” thick with an exterior layer of 9k rose gold and an inner layer of sterling silver. This unique material combines the projection of silver with the warmth of gold.
Sterling Silver – Known for its immediate response and clear tone, sterling silver is the most popular metal used in professional flutes. Our flutes are available in three tubing thicknesses (.014”, .016” and .018”). The thinnest wall (.014”) is very responsive and the lightest of our models. The heaviest wall (.018”) provides a deep, dark sound. The medium wall (.016") is the most popular thickness due to its ease of response and depth of sound.
