Katrina Penman

Katrina Penman is a flutist and composer. Her audio and video recordings of her own compositions have won prizes at the Global Music Awards, Akademia Awards (Los Angeles), Vienna Classical Music Academy Awards, European Classical Music Awards, Swiss International Music Competition and the World Music Gran Prix. Her recent album “Lumina” (Novus Promusica, 2024) contains her own original flute transcriptions of classical works, while her 2025 album “Beyond” (Solfa Records) is a presentation of her original compositions for flute and piano. Both are available on Spotify and all digital platforms, including Youtube.
Katrina’s works for flute ensemble have won prizes at Sir James Galway’s International Flute Festival, the Asociación de Flautistas de Portugal and the NFA Newly Published Music competition. These works have been performed in different halls and conservatories in the USA and throughout Europe, among them, the Auditori in Barcelona, in collaboration with the ESMUC (Catalunya’s Superior Music Conservatory), at Trinity College of Music in London and at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid.
As a teacher, Katrina has held masterclasses and courses at different conservatories in Spain, including the Royal Conservatory in Madrid. In 2023 she was a member of the jury at the Spanish Flute Association’s young performers’ competition in Málaga, having been commissioned to write the compulsory test piece, “Antequera”, for which she has subsequently won a number of prizes. Katrina teaches on the educational project of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León in Valladolid, coaching flutists in the children’s and youth orchestras. She has also contributed to the “Young Flute Player” book series.
As a soloist, Katrina has performed her own works at the NFA Conventions in Chicago (2022) together with guitarist María Elena de Prada, NFA San Antonio (2024), where she performed solo and duo with Nicole Chamberlain, as well as at the Flute Center of New York, Flute World San Francisco, a variety of halls in Miami and a large number of concert halls and conservatories in Spain. In 2023 she performed as a soloist at the Brazilian Flute Festival with the support of Powell Flutes, and at the AFE Spanish Flute Convention in Malaga. In 2025 she returned to the AFE to perform and present her compositions with the publishers Brotons & Mercadal. In May 2025 Katrina performed her own solo compositions at the Old Town Hall in Vienna, as a prizewinner of the Classic Pure Vienna Competition.
Katrina is a founder member of Trio Rigoletto. They presented their debut album “Trio Rigoletto” in 2014 and performed as guest artists at the British Flute Convention and gave several recitals around Spain, including at the 2016 Spanish Flute Convention in Bilbao sponsored by Powell. The album is available on Spotify with the Novus Promusica label.
Katrina has performed as a flutist with orchestras such as La Scala in Milan and the Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, as well as with numerous Spanish orchestras. She has performed in festivals including the BBC Proms in London and has toured in Japan, Russia and throughout Europe with the Symphonica d’Italia conducted by Lorin Maazel. Katrina studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Jaime Martin and the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan with Davide Formisano.
