Robert Cart

Principal flute at the Montclair Orchestra

Robert Cart received the degrees of Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Maryland College Park, Master of Music at Indiana University – Bloomington, and Bachelor of Music at DePauw University.  His teachers included Francis Fuge, James Pellerite, Peter Lloyd, and Gary Schocker.

Renowned for his colorful and singing tone, Cart has served as principal flutist of the Montclair Orchestra, and as flutist/piccoloist with the Landsdowne Symphony, Roxbough Orchestra, and the Georgetown Symphony.  Hehas toured England, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and China, and has worked under such notable conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Raymond Leppard, and David Zinman.

Cart made his debut as a soloist at the age of 16 performingMozart’s Concerto in D in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Since then, he has performed as soloist at Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Whitehouse, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and the Philips Collection in Washington, D.C. His chamber music performances have included appearances with the Julius, Coolidge, Heimat, and Envoy String quartets, and he is the founding flutist of the Montclair Wind Quintet and the Cali Chamber Ensemble. As an advocate for new music, he has premiered new works by Roger Hudson and Gary Schocker (with the composer at the piano) in recital at Carnegie Hall.

Cart is the Founding Director of the John J. Cali School of Music and Professor of Music at Montclair State University.  As Director, he has raised over $8 million in scholarship endowments and bequests, initiated graduate string quartet and woodwind quintet residencies, overseen new curriculum development, and appointed world-renowned faculty-artists.  With a focus on social justice, he has grown the scope of community outreach through student and faculty chamber music performances, and through the expansion of the preparatory division into underserved communities.  As Professor of Music, he maintains a studio of undergraduate and graduate flutists, and performs and presents clinics and master classes worldwide.  His passion for working with aspiring young musicians has led him to perform Chaminade’s Concertinoand Bulla’s Rhapsody for flute/piccolo and band with the Bloomfield Youth Band, Borne’s Carmen FantaisieBrillante with the East China Normal University Symphony Orchestra in Shanghai and the Chesapeake Youth Symphony, and Chaminade’s Concertino with the Montclair State University Wind Symphony.
